Saluda County Health Department Birth Records

The Saluda County Health Department is at 201 W. Smith Street, Saluda, SC 29138. This office serves as a local branch of the state vital records system. Staff can issue a short form birth card for any South Carolina birth registered from January 1, 1915 to present. The short form is a state-issued certification confirming the birth is on record, and it is accepted for many routine purposes.

Long-form certified birth certificates are only available from the South Carolina Department of Public Health Office of Vital Records at 2600 Bull Street, Columbia, SC 29201. The state office phone is (803) 898-3630. For most legal needs such as passport applications, driver's license applications, or school enrollment, the long-form document from the state office is required. The county health department can also issue death certificates for deaths that occurred in Saluda County in the last five years. For older records or records from outside the county, contact the state office.

How to Request Saluda County Birth Certificates

There are three ways to request a Saluda County birth record: by mail, online, or in person at the state office in Columbia. The search fee is $12.00, which is non-refundable under S.C. Who Can Obtain Saluda County Birth Records

Access to certified Saluda County birth records is restricted under S.C. Code Ann. § 44-63-80. Eligible requestors include the person named on the certificate if they are 18 or older, a parent named on the record, a legal guardian with documentation, a legal representative with proof of authority, and immediate family members of a deceased person who provide a certified death certificate. The SC Department of Social Services may also access records for child support and paternity purposes.

All applicants must include a copy of a valid government-issued photo ID. Acceptable forms include a driver's license, state ID, passport, or military ID.
